Start Watching Prices Early
(2–3 Months Out)
Start checking flights a couple of months before your trip so you get a feel for what prices normally look like. The goal is not necessarily to book immediately, but to recognize a genuinely good deal when it appears.
Know Your “Book Now” Price
The biggest thing is knowing what counts as a good fare for your route. If you see a price that clearly falls into that range, it is usually worth booking instead of stressing over whether it might drop another $50 later.
As a general benchmark for summer travel:
- Toronto or Montreal to Vancouver under $450 round trip is usually a very good deal
- Halifax to Vancouver under $550 round trip is a good deal
- Alberta to Vancouver under $200 round trip is great
The Sweet Spot Is Usually 6–8 Weeks Before Departure
For most summer trips to Vancouver, the best prices tend to appear about 6–8 weeks before departure. Booking extremely early can sometimes be surprisingly expensive, while waiting until the last minute usually means prices climb quickly.
Because this is peak summer travel season in Vancouver, we would generally lean toward booking on the earlier side once prices look reasonable.
Flexibility Helps More Than Anything
If your schedule allows it, even shifting your flights by a day or two can sometimes make a surprisingly big difference in price. Midweek flights, especially Tuesday or Wednesday departures, are often cheaper than peak weekend travel days.
Always Check What the Fare Actually Includes
Some “cheap” fares stop looking cheap once baggage, seat selection, or carry-ons are added in. Before booking, double check what is included and compare the final total, not just the first price you see. Sometimes paying slightly more upfront ends up being the better value overall.
